A user tries to kick off the habit, but the withdrawal symptoms make it impossible for him to let go his substance abuse and the realization that he cannot live without the weed soon dawns on him. Addiction is a physical, mental and a spiritual ailment. Physically one cannot stop the urge to go for the smoke and mentally one is obsessed with the desire to use even if it means destroying oneself or the loved ones who are dependent on you.

An addict will try to influence loved ones through the use of guilt, fear, and anger, and this happens when he reaches the bottom of his addiction and conditions worsen. Loved ones will try to relieve the suffering by supporting mentally and financially, but the effects are just the opposite. The best recourse is to encourage the addict to change his attitude towards life and approach the problem in a positive way. If your loved one is an addict don’t forget to focus on your life. The addict will be doing the same.

Once the Addict begins recovery, never try to patronize the addict. Keep a strict watch to see if the addict is in possession of drugs. This can be a tough proposition but is necessary.  At the same time scolding or blaming the user for his past will also not solve the problem.

The user has stopped taking drugs and is in the recovery process but please don’t expect your troubles with the addict to disappear in an instant. Support of loved ones will be most needed when the user goes to counseling, and it could lead to conflict with your normal schedule. Here the support of the near and dear ones is of high value when the addict starts spending his time reading literature, chatting with the counselors, writing, meditating, and praying.
